NEC Infrontia adopts Esmertec’s Java runtime platform, Jbed CDC, as the standard JVM for its terminal devices

Duebendorf-Zurich, Switzerland and Tokyo, Japan, August 31, 2005 – Esmertec™, a leading provider of software solutions for mobile phones and embedded devices, announces that it has signed a licensing agreement with NEC Infrontia Corporation (www.necinfrontia.co.jp), a leader in the development, manufacturing and sale of terminal devices for IP (Internet Protocol) and web systems in Japan, where Esmertec’s Jbed™ CDC will be adopted as the standard Java™ Virtual Machine (JVM) for NEC Infrontia’s terminals.

NEC Infrontia, in line with its JVM strategy, will initially integrate Esmertec’s Jbed CDC in devices including PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) and information terminals at retail outlets in Japan. Jbed CDC can be easily combined with browsers, creating an interactive environment that supports both Java and native applications optimal for use in devices including business PDAs, Point-Of-Sales (POS) systems, onboard computers in vehicles, printers and mobile handsets.

Jbed CDC will be deployed with Esmertec’s patented FastDAC™ compilation engine, which compiles Java bytecodes into native code through intelligently prioritizing code paths based on frequency of execution. Jbed CDC with FastDAC supports the latest Java specifications and delivers superior Java performance for embedded devices through utilizing minimal memory, processor and battery resources.

NEC Infrontia’s Associate Senior Vice President Eiichi Kumagai says, “Performance and reliability are vital factors for us as a provider of embedded devices for businesses. We have selected Esmertec’s Jbed as it is a proven product that has been successfully implemented in the market and offers excellent real-time performance.”

Naoki Iizuka, CEO of Esmertec Japan, says, ‘We have always sought innovation in the field of VM technology. NEC Infrontia is working with us as they have strong confidence in our high-performance technology based on global research and development. We hope that the products with both our technologies will lead to further growth in the embedded business market’.
