Esmertec acquires OOVM

Duebendorf-Zurich, Switzerland / Aarhus, Denmark – July 27, 2004 – Esmertec™, a leading provider of software solutions for mobile phones and embedded devices, and OOVM, a developer of disruptive software platforms for the embedded market, have signed an agreement for the acquisition of OOVM by Esmertec.

OOVM was founded by Lars Bak and three other experts in virtual machine technology. Prior to OOVM, the co-founders were involved in the technical lead, project management and development of Java™ HotSpot™ and CLDC HotSpot.

OOVM’s core product is an object-oriented platform with an operating system or virtual machine that dramatically reduces software development, integration and maintenance cost for device and chipset manufacturers. It achieves this through a secure, serviceable, analyzable and always-on platform that is designed for devices with minimal memory such as home appliances, sensors, billboards, point-of-sales systems, and vending machines.

“Strategically, OOVM fits perfectly with Esmertec’s successfully implemented wireless Java solutions” said Alain Blancquart, CEO of Esmertec. “This acquisition enables Esmertec to provide the best software solutions and technologies for embedded devices from very small to large memory requirements.”

“Our vision was to build great disruptive technology for embedded systems. We achieved this objective and now with Esmertec, we have the organisation, the sales network and market reach to bring this technology to the market,” said Lars Bak, CEO of OOVM.

OOVM will be integrated into the Products division of Esmertec. The solution is targeted at silicon manufacturers to address embedded devices markets such as machine-to-machine (M2M), consumer electronics and industrial automation.

“OOVM’s technology represents a new paradigm for embedded software development. With this product, embedded device manufacturers have a dependable solution that vastly improves reliability and development, “said Anne-Marie Larkin, CTO, Esmertec. “Lars and his team are great assets to the Esmertec team. With them joining the R&D team, Esmertec clearly has one of the best team of Java virtual machine and embedded software development experts in the world.”
