Thommen Medical closes financing
Waldenburg, November 21, 2003 – Thommen Medical, provider
of the SPI® dental implant system, announced today that the
company raised CHF 14.1 million in a financing round which was
recently closed. A first tranche of CHF 8.1 million was subscribed
by the lead-investor Venture Incubator who was joined by new and
existing investors BiomedInvest, HBM Bioventures, Invision, Ineo
and Acceleration International in June 2003. A second tranche
of CHF 6.0 million was recently closed with the participation
of new investors Neomed and Genevest as well as two private investors.
Thommen Medical has thus been able to attract an experienced syndicate
of investors in a difficult financing environment and has significantly
broadened its shareholder base.
The company announced as well that they have entered final talks
with a Japanese firm. The Japanese partner who has a specialized
sales organisation for dental implants and an established customer
base, will exclusively distribute the SPI®-implant system
in Japan starting in early 2004. A final announcement will be
made at a later date.
“The closing of the financing round and entering final
talks with our Japanese partner are important milestones for us”,
said CEO Andreas Stutz. “They are prerequisites for the
future growth of the company. The fact that well-known institutional
investors came on board and that a well-known Japanese distributor
sees promise in our implant system shows confidence in Thommen
Medical and our team”.
Thommen Medical, founded in August 2001, has shown significant
growth in its second year and has positioned itself in the market
as a recognized provider of a top-class dental implant system
and high-level services. Thommen Medical develops and manufactures
the SPI®-implant system in Waldenburg and Bettlach (Switzerland)
and has their own sales organisations in Switzerland, Germany,
Italy and the USA. As of 2004, the SPI®-System will be distributed
in Japan.
